Girls Sanctuary in Iraq
Architecture & Urbanism
With the challenges Iraq is currently facing, architects and designers must address these pressing issues. One of these is designing safe "homes" for children, especially young girls, to help them heal from the traumatic loss of their parents due to war. Our design approach focuses on promoting healthy living, encouraging activities with peers, and, most importantly, providing a sense of security and comfort for the girls.
The sanctuary is strategically located along the Tigris River. The proposed design emphasizes natural lighting and ventilation through numerous openings. This not only conserves energy but also allows users to enjoy views of the river while preserving the existing palm trees. Additionally, we have created a Green Reserved Area on-site to ensure a balanced proportion of built spaces and greenery.
The sanctuary's architectural form is inspired by a modified circle. The circular shape, with no sharp corners, creates a friendly and protective environment, fostering a sense of unity and connection among the girls.
The color palette features predominantly white and green. White conveys optimism, innocence, and the promise of new beginnings, while soft green or sage green is used as an accent, symbolizing refreshment, harmony, and balance. This color choice reflects universal love, environmental awareness, and peace. A touch of wood is also incorporated to add warmth to the overall ambiance.
